Make a fashion statement for sustainability in this 100% Silk Hand stitched Kantha Dupatta Stole. A Kantha dupatta is a perfect trans-seasonal piece that can be worn as a scarf, wrap, or throw. Kantha is an ancient form of hand stitch embroidery that originated in India. Pieces of pre-loved sarees are upcycled and transformed into beautiful scarves giving you style with soul.
Our collection of Kantha scarves are handstitched by women artisans in Rajasthan. Kantha is a heritage craft dating back centuries. Kantha stitching is a labour-intensive, artisanal form of hand embroidery rooted in good sustainable design. Pieces of vintage sarees are repurposed and stitched together in a simple running stitch, holding the vintage cloth in place. Frayed raw edges, patchwork, and human inconsistencies give each piece a one-of-a-kind feel.
The roots of Kantha (pronounced KAHN-taa) can be traced to Bangladesh and the Bengal region, and so Kantha can be defined as a Bengali art form. This ancient embroidery technique has rich cultural roots that have been passed down for generations, from mother to daughter, for over five hundred years.
Kantha’s origin comes from “kontha”, which means “rags” in Sanskrit. Over five hundred years ago, Bengali women would sew layers of discarded sarees together with a running stitch to create quilts. The original purpose of these quilts was for a simple necessity – to keep warm during the cold winters. Kantha is an art that has been sustainable since the beginning.
